Kickin’ it with K9s

COVID-19 Update:

Due to COVID-19, the Kickin’ It With K9s program has been temporarily suspended. We are not onboarding new volunteers at this time, and we are not permitting existing volunteers to take dogs on field trips or sleepovers in order to limit entry to our facility to essential personnel only. Don’t worry, our dogs are still getting lots of TLC and we hope to have the program back up and running soon! Thanks for your understanding and stay safe and healthy!

Kickin’ it with K9s!

We know that animal lovers in our community want to do more to help shelter dogs. And now, there’s an easy way to do it!

Introducing Kickin’ it with K9s! Kitsap Humane Society is inviting community members to take dogs on field trips to the park, to the beach, and other dog-friendly destinations  in Kitsap – even sleepovers at your home! – to give them a break from the stress of shelter life.

We’ve made it easy to participate. All it requires to begin is a quick, one-time orientation.  After you’ve attended an Orientation, daytime field trips are scheduled seven days a week, with dogs leaving in the morning, and returning to the shelter by noon to be available for adoption. You’ll leave with  a special doggie backpack filled with supplies!

We are currently in the process of switching over to an online webinar version of orientation, rather than holding in-person classes, in order to make the volunteer onboarding process more accessible to all volunteers. Stay tuned for further information once the webinar is complete. Expected timeline is March 2020. In the mean-time, email kickinitwithk9s@kitsap-humane.org with questions.

Once you’re on your field trip or sleepover, we encourage you to share photos of your K9 companion on social media, so others can see your pup having fun in real life (and help get them adopted!) Be sure to use the hashtag #khskickinitwithk9s and tag Kitsap Humane Society! 😊 We’re also interested in what you learn about your dog’s behavior while on your adventure, so we can better meet his or her needs and help them find their perfect match! When you return to the shelter, you’ll fill out a brief report card to share with the dogs future adopter.

Kitsap Humane Society is honored to be among 100 shelters in the U.S. chosen by Maddie’s Fund to be part of this program/study on how field trips and sleepovers can reduce stress in shelter dogs.
