Wednesday, Nov. 1 – Silverdale, WA – Kitsap Humane Society’s Rescue Me program took in 22 homeless puppies, kittens and adult pets saved from storm-ravaged Puerto Rico, and most will be available when the shelter opens at noon today. The shelter is also preparing to receive a second delivery of homeless cats and kittens displaced by the fires in Santa Rosa, Calif., on Wednesday evening.

“Our teams have been working around the clock to get the Puerto Rican pets checked in, examined, and ready to meet adopters today,” said KHS Director of Animal Welfare Natalie Smith. “They’re such nice animals and we know our community will step up to provide loving homes for them all.”

Thousands of pets poured into Puerto Rico’s shelters after Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated the island, both as strays and pets surrendered by owners who lost everything and, sadly, couldn’t provide water, food or shelter to their beloved pets. Now Puerto Rico’s shelters are inundated and overcrowded, resulting in collaborative lifesaving efforts by Kitsap Humane Society, Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Seattle Humane and Puerto Rico shelters.

Kitsap Humane Society is seeking donations to help support pets left homeless by the hurricanes, fires and other natural disasters. Many of the Puerto Rico dogs need spay and neuter surgeries and routine medical treatment as part of their pre-adoption care.

In addition to Puerto Rico, KHS’ Rescue Me program has taken in homeless pets earlier this year from the hurricanes in Texas and the fires in California’s wine country, saving lives and allowing local shelters to open space for more animals in need.
