Kitten Season has begun! It is the time of year when cats give birth and flood animal shelters nationwide with homeless litters.

Why Does Kitten Season Occur?

In 2009, KHS altered 802 kittens and in 2010 is offering a Litter Abatement Program.

When warm weather coincides with female cats’ heat cycles, female cats go into heat and male cats come running from near and far. The easiest way to help reduce the overwhelming numbers of unwanted cats is to spay and neuter your own cat and encourage others to do the same. Unaltered cats are driven by their hormones and tend to sneak outdoors primarily in search of a mate. Mating just once can start a domino effect that can result in dozens, even hundreds or thousands of unwanted animals.

KHS Litter Abatement Program

If your pet has had a litter, bring the offspring to KHS, the litter will be spayed and neutered when of appropriate age, found forever homes and parent spayed free of charge through our Litter Abatement Program (LAP). The altering of pets helps to curb pet overpopulation in our area. The goal of Kitsap Humane Society is to help save the life of every adoptable animal and this is just another way we strive to reach this goal.
